Moore ClearComm is a part of Moore Kingston Smith – a dynamic, leading professional firm of accountants and business advisors.  Their focus is providing data privacy, cyber security, business continuity and information security to organisations around the world. Because they deal with such sensitive information on a daily basis, it’s important they hire the right people. From support desk roles right up to consultants, recruitment is all about getting it right for Moore ClearComm. That’s why Director of cyber services Maritz got in touch with Jane at Wildcat Careers.

What Happens When You Don’t Use A Recruiter…

Originally Martiz had been put in charge of hiring a new cybersecurity consultant for their team. The company had a lot of potential for growth, but they had reached the limit of what they could do with the current team. Like many businesses the budget to actually recruit someone was fairly tight, which meant Martiz tried an incredibly low-cost option at first – LinkedIn.

But while LinkedIn is good at many things recruitment isn’t really one of them. While he did find a couple of promising candidates this way, neither worked out and they were struggling to find someone who met their requirements. So Martiz decided to try a different approach and work with a recruiter.

The Brief

Moore ClearComm were looking for a junior cyber security consultant and were keen to keep the process as short as possible. Jane was given a copy of the job specification, and after a discussion with the rest of the team, she gained a good understanding of the type of qualities they were looking for in an ideal candidate. This also meant understanding the fast-paced environment they were working in, and what would be required of a candidate that was successful.

A Personalised Approach To Recruitment

While Martiz had some ideas about how he would like to approach the screening and interview process, Jane worked with him and his team to streamline the steps so that they could filter as many candidates as possible without wasting time or resources. This included various assessments to ensure candidates’ suitability and see their reactions and instincts to common scenarios in the business.

From there Jane created job adverts for various job boards, headhunted, designed the interview and screening process so that only successful candidates received the advanced assessments, and began searching for a consultant that fitted the brief. In just 2 and a half weeks Jane found a pool of candidates for Martiz to choose from, and supported him in interviewing each one.

One of those candidates stood out as an absolute gem for Martiz, and was offered the role starting right away. Martiz even asked Jane if she had more candidates like him that she could put forward!

Maritz’s Final Thoughts

‘We were looking to hire a Junior cyber security consultant, but our own efforts on LinkedIn had yielded no results. Jane was able to come on board quickly and gain a clear understanding of the kind of person we were looking for. Before we knew it, she had created a job advert, posted it in the right places and searched her own pool of candidates to find us a shortlist of qualified candidates. After a round of interviews (which Jane supported us through) we hired a fantastic new consultant who has proven to be a great fit for the company. I wouldn’t hesitate to use Jane in the future or recommend her to others.’

Blucando is a full-service IT support business based in Hampshire. Founded in 2014 their refreshing approach to IT management and client support has seen them grow year on year, with a thriving team of engineers and IT support staff. Ben Fielding is one of the co-founders of Blucando, responsible for its continued success.

Having met Wildcat Careers founder Jane years before while she was working recruitment for an HR firm, Ben and his team had no hesitation about following her to Wildcat Careers when they needed recruitment services once again.

‘We’d been having varying degrees of success speaking to other recruitment firms before we started working with her, and once she started Wildcat Careers it was a no-brainer., We built such a strong relationship that she really knew our business. She understood it, and it clicked. So when she set up Wildcat Careers, we knew we had to work with Jane. We will follow her everywhere, no matter what she does in the future.’

Making A Recruiter Part Of The Team

Recruitment is often something business owners will think about only when they need it. It’s not often considered an ongoing requirement, but we’ve found that with IT and cyber security companies, having a recruiter on board can make all of the difference. Their companies are growing so quickly, with workers moving around more than in other industries, that having the right recruitment partner on board can make all of the difference. That’s certainly how Ben feels:

‘Jane handles all of our placements. We’re routinely growing and creating new roles, and we have a commitment to promoting from within. So Jane is helping us sense-check some of the promotions we look at internally, sense-check job descriptions and profiles, as well as helping us recruit into our service desk and front-line operations teams. So far Jane has placed 12 people with us, and we know there will be a lot more in the future!’

‘Working with Jane keeps things easy because she knows what we’re always looking for. And even when we’re not hiring, she’ll say ‘Oh, I’ve come across someone, I know you’re not hiring, but you should have a chat with them.’

When asked why he preferred working with a retained recruiter over just hiring someone ad-hoc, he said:

‘Jane really puts the effort in to keep up to speed with what’s going on in the business. I popped into the office the other day and she’s having a conversation with our technical director and office manager, just having a cup of tea and having a chat about the business. She’s not one to just leave things 3 months of silence – she puts the time in and into the relationship because she’s one of the team.’

Working With Wildcat

From start to finish, the recruitment process can be incredibly complicated and time-consuming, and it’s very easy to get wrong. Finding the right people to welcome into your business can sometimes feel like trying to find a needle in a haystack. We asked Ben to describe the process of working with Wildcat Careers:

‘So if there’s a vacancy for a role that she’s placed before she’ll sense check the job description, salary expectations, start times and so on. And she’ll ask us what kind of role we’re trying to fill in the team, because we’re not all carbon copies. We’re trying to look for people who have got that uniqueness they can bring in to expand the team’s technical and soft skillset. So she’ll find out the kind of person we’re looking for each time.’

‘And this is where I think she’s very unique. She asks questions – so why has this role come about and what’s the problem you’re trying to fix with this new role? What’s the gap? What’s the issue? Which can be quite challenging questions sometimes because, you know, you probably haven’t thought of it in that way. But Jane brings it all back to square one – what’s the problem we’re trying to fix? What’s the expectation of this role?’

Of course one of the dangers in recruitment is that every client is looking for that Golden Unicorn, and they can be notoriously hard to find. But at Wildcat Careers we’ve developed an approach that means we know exactly the type of person to target for Ben’s IT support needs, which makes us much more likely to find them. But of course, we need to manage client expectations too:

‘Jane stops us looking for a golden unicorn – the right person and the right salary in the right time frame, in the right location, with the right attitude, and with the right amount of experience. And then she goes and finds them anyway!’

Ben’s Final Thoughts

‘I think Jane could be successful in recruiting into almost any business. She definitely has an amazing kind of way and style about her. And we encourage her to be very open and honest and direct with us, which plays very well into Jane’s style. She will be honest with people. She won’t just tell you what you want to hear, or that she can do whatever you want her to do. She’ll tell us that we’re asking something difficult and tell us why. That we’re not offering enough money, that the timeframe is too tight, or that the market isn’t in the right place or that our reasons for hiring in that specific role aren’t right. But she does it in a way where you don’t feel challenged, you feel supported. And that’s that magic ingredient.’
